What is Soapstone?

A metamorphic rock that is mostly made up of talc with minor amounts of other minerals such as mica, chlorite, amphiboles, pyroxenes, and carbonates.

It's a soft, dense, heat-resistant rock with a high specific heat capacity. These qualities make it desirable in a wide range of architectural, functional, and artistic uses.
Because it is mostly made up of talc, it usually has a very smooth texture. Its name refers to its "soapy" feel and softness.

The smoothness of talc-containing materials makes them softer to the touch than most natural stone countertops. That doesn't imply, though, that they won't withstand the strain of a busy kitchen.

How Hard is Soapstone?

If you install soapstone countertops, remember that Soapstone is significantly softer than granite, marble, or quartz countertops. The soapstone's talc content gives it a Mohs hardness of 1. As a result, it is easily scratched. Ironically, its softness allows scratches to be readily repaired.
The scratches can be removed simply by sanding or using steel wool to buff them away. Despite its softness, soapstone is quite durable. Stoves constructed of soapstone in the 19th century are still in operation today.

Should you Install a Soapstone Countertop?

Soapstone is a natural rock that is non-porous. As a result, you won't have to worry about liquids seeping into the stone and staining it. This is in stark contrast to granite and marble, both of which are porous. When selecting a countertop material, porosity is an important consideration.

Imagine being concerned every time a bottle spills on the kitchen counter. Any liquids, including acidic ones such as vinegar and coffee, may be stored on soapstone counters without issue.

If you keep putting hot items on your kitchen countertops, then a soapstone countertop is ideal for you. Soapstone countertops can withstand high temperatures.

As a result, you won't have to worry about your soapstone countertop turning brown or being damaged by heat. This makes soapstone counters ideal in most kitchens.

Soapstone is a good choice for high-traffic areas because it wears well. It's also a good material to use if you want a natural stone countertop with a matte finish.

Do Soapstone Counters need to be Sealed?

Because soapstone is nonporous, it does not need to be sealed or maintained like other natural stone surfaces.
Many people choose soapstone because of its natural qualities and the lack of chemicals in the production and upkeep processes, which differs massively from marble countertops.

How do you Clean and Maintain Soapstone Counters?

Soapstone, unlike other natural stones is low-maintenance in every sense of the word. Because soapstone is nonporous, it is resistant to bacteria and does not require harsh chemicals. Only water and mild soap are necessary..
The softness and susceptibility to scratches and nicks of a soapstone countertop are two of the most common problems. Cutting boards may be used to preserve the surface.
The even better news is that user-induced flaws are generally repairable, as previously said. There's no need for a stone professional to come in and fix it

Advantages and Disadvantages of Soapstone Countertops

Soapstone Countertop Pros
Stain Resistant: A Soapstone countertop is non-porous, which means it won't stain and there's no need to worry about germs developing as with other countertop materials. It also doesn't react to acid, which can cause stains on other countertops.
Durable: Soapstone, despite its softness when compared to other stone countertops, remains long-lasting. soapstone is quite durable and can last for more than 20 years.
Eco-friendly: Soapstone is naturally occurring and may be reused. It's also chemical-free, which means you can often find salvaged soapstone for sale online.
Low maintenance: Unlike granite and marble, which need to be sealed and resealed at least once a year, Soapstone requires no sealing.
Cons of Soapstone Countertops
Easily Scratched: Because soapstone is a softer stone, it may easily be scratched. To prevent scratches, use a food preparation cutting board and avoid dropping things on it. It can, however, be resurfaced quite easily.
Not many color options: Soapstone is most often gray or darker gray, although it may be white, green, or bluish-gray. The more talc soapstone contains, the softer it will be. But soapstone will have veins similar to marble due to the presence of magnesium and calcium.
Wears unevenly: Because the kitchen is a high-traffic area, it's prone to fading fast. The color of areas that get the most usage in the kitchen fades faster than less-traveled regions, which may give an uneven appearance.
