Marble Kitchen Countertops: Good or Bad Idea?

Marble's beauty is breathtaking with hundreds of options to choose from. Though expensive, it can be a stunning addition to any kitchen, but is it suitable for kitchen countertops?
If you would rather consult with a stone restoration professional, feel free to give us a call and we will be more than happy to assist you.

Things to keep in mind with Marble Countertops

If you're considering a marble worktop for your kitchen countertops, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

First, marble is a relatively soft stone, which means it can scratch and stain more easily than harder materials like granite. You'll need to be extra careful with your marble countertops, using cutting boards and taking care not to spill acidic foods or drinks on the surface.

Marble is also a porous material, which means it can absorb stains. If you spill something on your marble countertop, you'll need to clean it up right away to avoid staining. And, because marble is a natural stone, each piece is unique and no two countertops will look exactly alike.

Marble is heat resistant but it can still be damaged by hot pots and pans. You'll want to use a trivet or hot pad when placing anything hot on your marble countertops.

If you're looking for a unique and beautiful countertop material, marble may be the right choice for you. Just be sure to take care of it properly to keep it looking its best.

Can you use Marble for Kitchen Countertops?

The simple answer is yes! but you must look after it! Marble is the top choice for kitchen worktops for many homeowners because of its beauty and durability, however, it isn’t perfect! Depending on what marble you go for, some are denser than others, while others can be very porous.
Marble is generally composed of calcium carbonate, which can react badly to acids, like lemon juice or vinegar, which can leave an etching mark on the surface of your marble kitchen countertop.

How to take care of a marble kitchen countertop?

Ensure your marble kitchen countertop is well sealed with a penetrating sealer like “lithofin stain-stop“, this will stop most stains from penetrating deep into the marble.

Some, if not most, acids will still etch the surface, but these can be easily dealt with some fine wire wool and some polish, however, this will only be possible if the marble has a honed finish, rather than a polished finish.
If the marble has a high gloss on it from either polish or some kind of acrylic, you will need to get a marble specialist to help you, as the surface will probably need to be sanded back with diamond abrasives.

Are marble countertops a good idea?

As usual, the answer to a question like this is, it depends! Are you looking for zero maintenance with a surface that hardly ever stains?

Marble probably isn't the right stone for you! I’d suggest you go for something a lot denser like granite.
However, if what you want is a beautiful stone that will make your kitchen look beautiful, there are few stones as beautiful as marble.

This is why Marble is so popular with kitchen countertops because they make the whole kitchen look fantastic. This natural material is breathtaking.

What are the pros and cons of using Marble countertops?

Advantages of using Marble Countertops:

Many Options: Marble is a beautiful natural stone that comes in many different colors and veining patterns.

Unique: Because each piece of marble is unique, your countertop will be one-of-a-kind.

Stunning: Marble can add a luxurious look to any kitchen.

Disadvantages of using Marble Countertops:

Scratches Easily: Marble is a relatively soft stone, which means it can scratch and stain more easily than harder materials like granite.

Porous: Marble is also a porous material, which means it can absorb stains.

Cost: Marble is typically more expensive than other countertop materials like granite or quartz.

How much do marble kitchen countertops cost?

We get asked how much marble kitchen counters cost quite a lot. We do not personally install marble kitchen countertops ourselves but have asked around to give you an idea of the cost.
Generally, you would be looking at around £320 per square meter for marble. Granite can be anywhere between £270-£450 for high-end granite, and quartz tends to be even more expensive at about £475 per square meter on average.

Why do marble kitchen countertops stain so easily?

Marble is a beautiful countertop material that has been used for centuries. It’s so popular because it’s glossy, durable, and resistant to staining.

Well, that’s what we are always told! Unfortunately, that's not quite true! Marble countertops can certainly stain if you are not careful!
Especially if you do not have a sealed finish! There are so many stories of red wine stains on white marble.

Marble is a beautiful and luxurious stone, but it’s not impervious to stains and spots. In fact, marble countertops are notorious for being prone to staining.

The reason that marble countertops are so stain-prone is because of the porous nature of the material. Marble has microscopic pores in its surface which means any liquid spilled on it can penetrate deep into the stone itself, causing lasting damage.
To avoid these problems, homeowners should take precautions when dealing with spills or accidents like setting up an area designated only for food preparation as well as making sure they don’t place hot items directly onto their surfaces.

Marble is made up of many minerals including calcite, dolomite, magnesium carbonate and iron oxide (which gives the stone its red color).

These minerals react with acids found in everyday products like lemon juice or wine – sometimes even just vinegar!

Cleaning these stains can be difficult because the pores often fill up again quickly after being scrubbed clean.

Final Thoughts on Marble Kitchen Countertops

Marble kitchen countertops and bathroom worktops are a luxurious and beautiful addition to any home, but they require more care than other countertop materials.

Marble is porous and susceptible to staining, so spills should be cleaned up immediately.

Homeowners should also take care not to place hot items directly on their marble surfaces. With proper care, marble countertops can last for many years.

Don't forget you can call us anytime if you have any questions or concerns about how best to look after your natural stone countertops or floors.
